WATER TREATMENT PLANT
Molalla River Intake
Despite significant flooding the water treatment plant was able to produce drinking water without interruption. The wastewater treatment plant took on even with flow that increased four time than the average winter flows was able to treat and discharge without any compliance violations.
The water plant is getting pump #2 replaced in late spring after getting accepting RL Reimers as bid for that project. It also has kicked off its design phase with Tetra Tech for the new intake screen structure.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
The Wastewater Team was able to respond to the significant increase in flows to the Wastewater Treatment due to the rain event without having a sanitary overflow.
PROJECT UPDATE
The Wastewater Treatment Plants Upgrades are in full swing with the walls of the sequencing batch reactor and aerobic digesters being a few weeks from completion and the catwalks have begun to be formed and concrete poured. This massive amount of steel and concrete will serve as the heart of the treatment plant for the next 20+ years.
The Control Building that will; house the operations staff, provide additional treatment preprocess that will improve efficiencies and increase waste reductions, a new laboratory that will increase the capability and efficiencies of our internal testing.

Molalla Water Quality Hosts Molalla River Middle School
On January 14, 2026, after several months of planning and preparation, a select group of middle school students from Molalla River Middle School spent the day at the City’s Water and Wastewater Treatment Facilities. The students received an introduction to plant operations from the City’s Water and Wastewater Operators, took part in a “Bingo” style scavenger hunt, and learned about the different careers available in Water and Wastewater treatment.
This initiative was made possible by the hard work, coordination and partnership of Molalla’s Water Quality Superintendent, Seth Kelly and the Middle School Career Coordinator, Dianna Steach.

Molalla Aquifer Storage and Recharge (ASR) Feasibility Study
On January 20, 2026, the City and a set of Engineering Consultants from the Dyer Partnership and Summit Water Resources held the official kickoff meeting for the ASR feasibility study. The purpose of this study is to analyze the feasibility of establishing an ASR in Molalla to provide a secondary water source for the City, and to determine the options and costs associated with development of an ASR facility. This study is just getting started, but you can review information and follow along on the “Water System ASR Study” page of the Molalla Current! https://current.cityofmolalla.com/water-system-asr-study

Molalla Receives $1mil Grant for Water Intake Structure
The City of Molalla would like to thank the Office of Representative Janelle Bynum for championing Molalla’s Water Intake project at the federal level and securing $1,092,000 in funding support (over 25% of Design + Construction costs) for the project, pending final authorization of the federal spending bill!
For those who have not been following along, the City has completed the pre-design studies and obtained full loan funding for a new Molalla River water intake. The purpose of the new intake is to replace the current “temporary emergency” intake installed after the 1996 floods destroyed Molalla’s permanent intake structure. The new system will be placed at a deeper location in the river to ensure continuous flows during low river conditions and will be constructed to withstand severe river conditions. You can check out the pre-design report by clicking on the image.
